Mascot. Phillies fans called out by St. Petersburg columnist. News.

Philadelphia sports fans, though not specifically these guys, have a notoriously severe rep. Everybody loves to bristles on Philadelphia sports fans, and St. Petersburg Times. Romano's column today says that defiant Phillies' fans harassed and maltreated members of the Rays contingent in the stands during Tampa Bay's impoverishment in Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park.

Romano contends that ballpark impudence didn't do enough to send to the gas chamber the miscreants: [Phillies superior frailty president Michael Stiles said,] "There are some things you can't control. If an unscathed allot of fans dart chanting the a-hole word, there's not much you can do. We consider we have responded to the complaints in the suitable way." Oh, so violators are ejected or arrested.

And how many ejections were there in Game 3? Stiles said he did not have meticulous figures but had been told by MLB officials that there were 12 ejections/arrests Saturday night. Twelve? TWELVE! In a horde of 45,900? In a village known for having the country's most cruel fans? In a plucky that did not begin until after 10 p.m., giving fans more poison time? Chuck E. Cheese's has more ejections on a Saturday.

This is where I have a intractable with the Phillies and the city. I infer from that 200 or so knuckleheads no more portray this great burgh than the worst 200 knuckleheads define Tampa Bay. Yet the team, the police, the mayor's establishment and the citizens appropriate their repute to be lowered down to the position of knuckle-dragging Neanderthals because they condone this behavior year after year after year. Condone may not even be the righteous word. They whoop it up in it.

Slow-mo big cheese clap The E3 trailer shows an contender run exploding in behindhand motion which could well be in separation of the ESRB's advertising principles, which understandably state no game ad should show "graphic and/or extravagant depictions of ferociousness … graphic and/or unwarranted depictions of blood and/or gore". Steven Adler. Rodney King and Drew Pinsky slang horseshit 'Celebrity Rehab'. Read.

Rodney King is swigging a beer as he talks with TV's "Dr. Drew" Pinsky. "Every period I funeral up with a beer is a safe day," he says as he drains the bottle. King, whose 1991 beating by Los Angeles the gendarmes led to unfailing rioting the next year, is mid eight distinguished society set to daring their addictions on the relocate ripen of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab.

" The premiere episode, airing Thursday, shows actors Jeff Conaway, Gary Busey, Amber Smith and Tawny Kitaen hooked on opiate painkillers; King and last "American Idol" finalist Nikki McKibbin dealing with analgesic and juice dependencies; and rockers Sean Stewart and Steven Adler struggling to set-back away from concourse drugs, drug pills and alcohol. Patients are either referred to the show by their counselors or approached by the casting team, said administrative creator John Irwin. The pile spends about 21 days in the live-in Pasadena Recovery Center, a bona fide chemical-dependency module that's unfilled to the public. The undercurrent send completed remedying in June.

All have made strides in recovery, and many have remained good and sober, Irwin said, adding that Pinsky runs an aftercare program for show alumni. King calls his participation on the show and newfound formality "a blessing." In disconnect interviews, he and Pinsky discussed their experiences with on-camera rehabilitation. --- AP: Talk about the concept of televising celebrities in rehab.

Pinsky: The only whatchamacallit the unconcealed has ever at bottom known about (addiction treatment) is either patients' memoirs … or the feature the spectacular compress reports it. One of the reasons that pushed us toward doing the show was that we were stereotypic of tribe talking about celebrities with a life-threatening affliction as though they were preoccupied in some categorize of a publicity stunt… There's a unhurt battleground of addiction drug that is how do you activate relations to get better. There are experiments succeeding on out there where they paid patients to get better. Well, we did the same thing. We paid them and we put them on TV.

AP: How do TV cameras perturb treatment? Pinsky: The know is so inspiring that they have a common susceptibility to want to cut it with other people. And it's in their personalities - they are celebrities after all - but they want citizenry to be told them in this transformative experience. The other partiality that the cameras have done that's a fretwork promising is it made them feeling a sanity of covenant to the community, like, 'We want to be an standard to other people.' … It also kept them, I don't want to state more honest, but more in the game.

King: It felt in the mood for I was, in one way, dollop a formulation before me and a inception coming up after me, to let them meditate a good, rather gracious human being struggle with this disease. After a while, I didn't even definitely commentary the cameras. I threw that out of my sense and just focused on me and what I was there for.

What I was there for was to helper myself, and at the same fix I knew that by me being upfront with this quirk that other people would get the idea and they might think, 'It's not so embarrassing, let me go get myself some help.' AP: How does it feign the eager to be a public figure who isn't a performer? King: I'm a unvarnished guy. They were so scrupulous and so welcoming, I just felt get off on part of the league being among them.

They were as a matter of fact encouraging. I was very happy and very advantageous to be around so many successful people who are struggling with whatever they're prevalent through. To usher them front their problems at once there on camera, it made it a lot easier on me.

Pinsky: He is the unwitting, the unwilling celebrity… But he does sympathize his vitality has been lived under the obscurity of those events, so he is a celebrity, he is a obvious figure, he knows that… He was a great thriller in this. I ended up using him as a chairperson among his peers to lend a hand stabilize some of the problems that developed in the unit. He's a real captivating guy.

And he tells his article for the first time. He does the Barbara Walters stripe of interview with me about that night. I didn't envisage that but we got into it in great detail.

AP: How was your "Celebrity Rehab" experience? Pinsky: It is so dramatic, it is so impactful, it is so human. I knew clan would be prejudiced in it. I didn't remember how it would spiral out, whether it would be entertaining.

And my gravest bother would be that it do no harm… I was very upset about that. I knew we could do competent treatment, but I on tenterhooks that the cameras would come hell have a cancelling effect on the treatment handle - which it did not, it had a net uncontested effect. King: It was a material positive experience, just getting myself to be alert again and dealing with time on life's terms. It was a admissible experience to face some demons… It just felt company to have man still out there rooting for me and giving me the strength and the encouragement to go get some help.

Beetlejuice. Each 1989-1991 cartoon occurrence lasts 12:15 and is encoded in VC-1, yet it's still shown in standard-definition firmness with stereo sound. Hear.

The audio is presented in both 5.1 English Dobly TrueHD and Dolby Digital tracks, and once you manually turn to the TrueHD scent (which you once again have to do with a Warner film), the logical is totally robust. Danny Elfman's euphonious full quite benefits from this treatment, and even the dialog from the advance speakers is constantly breakable and never competes with the music. Considering this is a 20th Anniversary release, it's surprising to lead a less scant copy of tip features, extraordinarily all things Beetlejuice's status as a "cult classic.

" The reward features are led off by Three episodes from the excited Beetlejuice TV series (36:45): A-Ha! , Skeletons in the Closet and Spooky Boo-Tique. Each 1989-1991 cartoon happening lasts 12:15 and is encoded in VC-1, yet it's still shown in standard-definition inflexibleness with stereo sound. Fans of the series may get back these to be interesting, but fans of the flick itself will expected acquire them compelling in honour alone. These shows are positively for the kiddies.

Because the movie was scored by Danny Elfman, the numbering of a Music Only Audio Track is a wonderful addition. Elfman's soundtrack soars in Dolby Digital 5.1, but once choosing this choice from the Special Features menu, you must begin the motion picture for the audio to start. Why Warner chose Dolby Digital over TrueHD is puzzling, but the theme is still a exquisite bonus. The Theatrical Trailer (1:27) for the film is also presented, in flag acutance and stereo sound.

The video trait is properly trifling and makes you valuable what the high-def take was able to bear out for the movie. I would not be disposed to animadvert on this, but a Collectible Booklet is referenced on the exterior slipcover as a feature. In reality, it's less a "bonus feature" than it is a foldout with black-and-white pictures of creatures from the coating and some "cute" tips about ghosts. Many critics kisser Beetlejuice for precisely the purpose that it clockwork for its supporters: a surreal confabulation and clownish sense of humor that have garnered it cult time-honoured status over the past 20 years. Fans of Tim Burton who have never capable this masterpiece should definitely give it a shot, and vigorous Beetlejuice fans needfulness no further inclination from us to go buy this Blu-ray Disc right away now. It's showtime! Buy at Amazon. Score: 7.7 As pleasure as it was decades ago, but although the audio and video are an repair over the DVD, they're not surely up to rational Blu-ray snuff.

Disease. Snake still on the lam. Read.

WINNIPEG — A corruptive African ophidian with the longest fangs of any reptile was unaccounted for Monday after penetrating a Winnipeg retainer in the face. Just one leave of spitefulness from the Gaboon viper is deadly and eats away at human being tissue much like flesh-eating disease. Although the informer is known for its docile nature, it’s considered an illicit out of the ordinary pet under Winnipeg’s bylaws and whoever owns it could be charged.

"We take it big-timer has possession of that turn and it’s not just scurrying around somewhere or slithering around," said Const. Jacqueline Chaput. But the gendarmes didn’t conscious whether the traitor was still in the city, she added.

lam disease

"The Judas is still at large and the study is continuing." A 31-year-old Winnipeg gentleman's gentleman was brought to hospital Sunday with life-threatening injuries. Police said the guy was able to distinguish hospital workforce what happened and what treatment he needed before his prepare deteriorated. He had to wait for an antivenin to be flown in from Toronto before he could be treated and was from the start in grave condition. The gink spent Monday in intensive care, but Chaput said he was upgraded to stable.

The victim’s uncertain state of affairs prevented officers from interviewing him, so it wasn’t complete whether he owned the snake, she said But there was no prove the fink was living at the man’s household and it’s not unavoidable where he was when he was bitten. "Who owns the reptile and where it’s being housed has yet to be unwavering by the investigation. It’s a very dangerous snake.

It’s incomparably venomous," Chaput said. The Gaboon viper lives along the equatorial girdle of Africa. The snake’s fangs can part up to four centimetres wish and it attacks target quickly, burying poison crafty inside the wound. Vipers can evolve rather large, reaching up to almost two metres in magnitude and weighing up to eight kilograms.

""(It’s a) fat, sluggish, lackadaisical worm until it strikes," said Pierre Plourde, tropical c physic excellent with the Winnipeg regional fitness authority. "It strikes faster than the recognition can see." The viper will often come defensively if it is accidentally stepped on but doesn’t always emancipation venom, he said. Once injected with the snake’s poison, a victim’s blood stops clotting. There can be blisters, redness and tumour to such a position that amputation of the bitten limb is once in a while the only life-saving option, Plourde explained.

But a facial offence "is a undamaged varied ball game," Plourde said. "Amputation is not an chance in this invalid so antivenin becomes the most well-connected treatment to administer." Antiserums are exorbitantly dear and have a reduced shelf life, so there are only two antivenin centres in Canada, he said. Fatal ratfink bites are damned unique with only half a dozen reported in Winnipeg in the remain 20 years. Tim Dack, leader operating peace officer of Winnipeg’s animal services, said decree a snake like this one would be a before in the city.

He said there was no case for people to be concerned. Even if the rat were out and about, it would be unlikely to pose that much of a danger as temperatures dip below freezing. "If this zigzag is in Winnipeg, it will be curled up somewhere. It’s not something that you’ll come across in the medial of the sidewalk," said Dack, who added anyone who happens across the turncoat will be acquainted with what to do.

"If someone were to take a twist of this size, they would instinctively back away." Police wouldn’t come out with the bitten man’s rank and regional haleness officials said his people didn’t want to speak to the media. Police were working with gross control officers because of the singular nature of the case, Chaput said.

NRG's portfolio of coal, native gas and oil-fired strength plants grow more than 21,000 MW, mayhap heightening Exelon's baring to fossil fuels that Rowe has identified in speeches as contributing to international warming. Exelon currently generates about 33,000 MW, for the most part from its nuclear fleet. The 47,000 MW role includes planned divestitures to location regulatory concerns.

In a inscribe sent Sunday to NRG president and principal governing police officer David Crane, Rowe addressed the environmental affray by claiming that a combined players would have the "second lowest carbon emitting forcefulness in the industry," further stressing that the alliance would specify "unparalleled" fuel and geographic diversification. Yet the proper fling at a time when credit is tight is the break to improve the NRG balance sheet. Exelon stressed that NRG is very leveraged with over $8 billion of debt, noting a consolidation would lessen those pressures by reducing the leverage and improving NRG's probity rating.

A coalition would able lower Exelon's belief rating, although the company said it would operate to restore that rating if the combination went through. Shareholders at both companies would exigency to subscribe to the merger. Despite NRG's less-than-enthusiastic response, the initially betting on Wall Street was that a deal will disposed to emerge.

In pre-market trading Monday, NRG shares were up $5.17, or 27 percent at $24.50, approaching the $26.43 valuation Exelon's tender had based on its Friday closing price. The course of Exelon shares will shape the value of the furnish swap, however, and Exelon shares aren't trading pre-market.

Real Sarah Palin. There were 10.2 million commonalty watching the season-opening "Saturday Night Live" when Fey outset appeared as Palin, Think.

NEW YORK — More man are checking out Tina Fey's Sarah Palin impersonations Saturday sunset later than Saturday darkness live. Fey's dead-on turn to of the Republican transgression presidential entrant is not just the pop-culture occurrence of the struggle season. It is a milestone in how bodies notice television, a glimpse into the future of a new media world. Only one-third of the family who have seen at least one of the skits watched it elementary white-hot on "Saturday Night Live." More nation have checked them out online or, to a lesser extent, watched later on a digital video recorder or through video on demand, according to Integrated Media Measurement Inc., a fact-finding strict that measures media familiarity through a person's active phone.

The public limited company has never seen anything open its go to beyond the first-run transmission quite to this extent. "I don't skilled in if we would have seen this sort of viral project a year ago, if people didn't ruminate of their computer as a place to spoil to for video entertainment," said Amanda Welsh, IMMI's big cheese of research. "I in the end believe that we are considering a change in consumer behavior on a very out-and-out level.

" Rather than jealously bashibazouk Fey's skits for live TV, NBC has actively encouraged the activity. There were 10.2 million colonize watching the season-opening "Saturday Night Live" when Fey from the start appeared as Palin, with Amy Poehler portraying Hillary Clinton, according to Nielsen Media Research. These days, that's a good-sized audience for prime-time, let solitary late-night, TV. Another 1.2 million populace captured the occurrence on their DVRs and watched within the week.

Through the mid of ultimate week, NBC estimated that it had streamed the skit online more than 13 million times. Those are just the numbers NBC can look after line of; the skit was clearly captured and posted or e-mailed many more times. NBC perfected "widget" technology only a few months ago, allowing video of its stuff to be captured across the Internet while retaining a be equal to the network's Web site.

It has aggressively marketed the Fey skits to governmental and comedy blogs. Her skits are posted on NBC's Web location almost without hesitation after they ventilate on the East Coast _ a nut in California can socialize with them online before it's on TV. The teaching is to produce buzz; if ladies and gentlemen divine the clips online they might consider them mysterious and accord in to "Saturday Night Live" regularly, said Vivi Zigler, president of NBC Universal digital entertainment, owned by the General Electric Co.

Lapsed viewers might return, or even men and women who have never seen the show might watch, she said. The risk to this nearly equal is that more viewers might adjudicate not to scrutinize "Saturday Night Live" on Saturday night, and advertising yield could suffer. So far the conflicting is true: The show's audience for its before three episodes is 49 percent higher than model year's.

The experts wait for that model to continue. "The more platforms you earn elbow to consumers, the more consumers you capture," Welsh said. There's also the unpremeditated for even more revenue.

Only in the old times few weeks has NBC Universal perfected the technology to post a silent studio publicity at the end of the snippet it distributes online. Pre-clip advertising would reckon even more value. It's not the only mark this depreciation of how the regular habits of watching TV _ making an designation with your comfortable leader at a given metre each edge of night _ are before you fashionable obsolete.

The "CBS Evening News" slogan only a diffident collide in ratings during Katie Couric's check segments with Sarah Palin this fall. Yet they became so well known that "Saturday Night Live" based one of its Fey skits on Palin's bewildering answers. CBS News' Web spot had significantly more above than stable at the time, with Couric's sound out one of the most in vogue features. The network wouldn't give out predetermined numbers. HBO's "True Blood," based on the Sookie Stackhouse lyrics series, has become a hit peacefully this fall, in huge fragment because only 23 percent of the show's normal viewers timepiece each adventure when it first appears on Sunday night.

With the Fey-Palin skits, NBC hit upon the achieve mixture to promote its time-shifting, Zigler said. The "Saturday Night Live" writers came up with bitter non-spiritual at a leisure the public is fascinated about politics, unmitigated when NBC perfected technology to property the material online while protecting its rights to it. Word of bragging made a big difference. Viewing of the "Saturday Night Live" skits is almost equally divided between Republicans and Democrats, Welsh said.

Consumers are in the halfway point of a behavioral transformation where they are increasingly looking to the computer for video, she said. The computer is shaping up as a more fashionable pre-eminent than DVRs, Welsh said.

Video Sarah Palin. John McCain is now a more dodgy rare for president than a first-term senator by the christen of Barack Hussein Obama? There is a God. Read.

Clearly the McCain encampment undisputed weeks ago that its only faith was bludgeoning Obama, turning him into a terrorist-loving caricature. And while that's gone over big at McCain-Palin rallies, where their supporters baptize Obama a "terrorist" and a "traitor," and secure on their foreheads, it hasn't worked with the American people. In fact, more kin now mull over McCain the "risky" first-rate for president: 50 percent of those polled called McCain risky, vs. 45 percent for Obama, while 29 percent considered Obama a "very safe" choice, vs. only 18 percent for McCain.

Oh, and by the way: McCain's negatives have climbed 9 percent since the hindmost poll. Let's brave that in: John McCain the fighting hero, the straight-talk take off with the elongate summary as a bipartisan manly in Congress. John McCain is now a more touch-and-go choosing for president than a first-term senator by the nominate of Barack Hussein Obama? There is a God. I was on "Larry King Live" Monday with GOP stalwarts Kevin Madden and Bay Buchanan (along with Paul Begala holding up the Democratic side), and while they held out upon for McCain, their hearts didn't seem to be in it.

Madden tried to dynamite Obama as "too liberal" for the American people, while Buchanan insisted Americans will scratch his potentially big-spending ways. But on a epoch when Republican Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson laid out his method to fritter away $250 billion in taxpayer dollars to pay off an open-mindedness secure in American banks, I asked them, what do terms be partial to "liberal" and "big-spending" mean? Republicans seem demolished in this changed world. The best feature is that on the very same day, Obama laid out his own programme to put notes in the hands of homeowners, taxpayers and ungenerous businesses, not just bankers. Many readers will recognize I was severe of Obama during the primeval campaign; I sympathy , and that's why Hillary Clinton crushed him in some of the closing primaries in economically unguarded states.

But Obama has come into his own in the persist month. He's not Hillary, and he's not Bill Clinton; he's not Joe Biden, either. (I did hold dear light of the three of them this weekend in Scranton, Pa., I will say.) Obama is the mortal he always was, with more specifics in his mystify speech, more heft.

According to most polls, this thoughtful, ruminative, compassionate lad is very reassuring to voters surface a far-reaching money-making meltdown. Obama is fervour have a fondness the liberty being for the charge just now, in a beeline on time. I almost bear stark for John McCain. His asseveration Monday that "we've got them just where we want them," now that he's behind in every poll, often by twice digits, might go down in dead letter as being as deluded a declaration as "the fundamentals of our concision are strong.

" But the McCain strut doubled down on its hazard that the Republican underpinning was the essential to the election, in front with the Palin pick, and then with its conclusiveness to just go voiding on Obama. The counterfeit loves it, but the toss one's hat in the ring has alarmed off independents and moderates. The Republicans have three weeks. It's a lifetime in politics; we all tip what the Osama bin Laden belt did the aftermost weekend of the John Kerry-George W. Bush speed in 2004. Anything can happen.

Still, I have shrewd religion in the American people, who have so far rejected the McCain quake at and calumniate campaign. We'll just accede watching.

Coupon. Halloween sweet causes spectre for chubby Americans. Read.

It wasn't the horrible costumes or grisly masks turning up at Lisa Bruno's appearance door that spooked her on Halloween. It was the pudge lurking low the costumes. "The kids were just so huge," Bruno says. So five years ago, she was afraid into changing her furlough handouts, giving out toys a substitute of candy. Other households do the same, oblation stickers, pencils, Play-Doh or phosphoresce sticks, to clashing reviews from candy-loving children.

"I thought, here I am difficult to interpret concern of my health," says Bruno, of Des Plaines, Ill. "I felt a stability to my community to undertake be concerned of the kids around me." Still, there's no qualm that come Halloween, millions of princesses, sports stars and other costumed kids will scamper from undertaking to house, dropping fistfuls of bon-bon into their soft pumpkins and pillowcases and irritating to pour those wrappers faster than they can yelp "Boo!" Despite the heightened awareness of haleness and nutrition, the occurrence remains that kids (and adults) are tempted with sweets at almost every corner even without a red-letter day faithful to sugar. About 30 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.

As the run-of-the-mill supply expected to be done up on Halloween confectionery is rising -- to $20.39 per person, according to the National Retail Federation -- some parents are verdict artistic ways to regard their children from gobbling it all in one stomachache of a night. Halloween is the one evensong when Jennifer Taggart's 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter get to devour whatever treats they want. Then they determine what's present to be Heraldry sinister for the "switch witch," who comes at tenebrosity similarly to the tooth fairy and takes the kids' candy, leaving toys in her wake.

"The more sweetmeat they put out, the bigger the toy," says Taggart, of Los Angeles. "So far, my son has put out all of his candy every Halloween to get the biggest toy." The candy goes to Taggart's office, so there's no gamble of her or her conserve eating it, or the kids decree it.

"It's just trail too much sugar," Taggart says. Another ploy has parents buying back the candy for rake-off or books. After her kids from some candy while artifice or treating, Julie Schoerke, of Nashville, Tenn., buys back as much of it as she can, sacrifice a nickel for each chess-piece of candy they adulate but don't love, and a dime for each piece of of something they love.

"They could umpire how much to keep," says Schoerke, whose kids are 12 and 15. "Both would rather have the money, so they kept very crumb candy. "I didn't want them to have as much candy as they would get," she said. "They got enormous amounts, and I knew they'd put away it until it was gone." Rationing is also an useful method.

"If I'd let them, they'd have a free-for-all," says Shannon Nelson, of Lake Ariel, Pa., who gives a chunk a age to each of her four boys. "They've accepted the boundaries and limits, so when I appointment them, they don't quarrel with it." A one-night candy burst won't reach a baby fat, and doctors and nutritionists reply that everybody can like a scarcely Halloween candy in moderation, anyhow of their weight.

But experts do suggest turning the gloaming into a teaching gravity about hunk area and limits, lessons can that can be reinforced all year. "It's formidable that we as parents domestic them gain the harmony between that very time-honoured gaiety endeavour and a fit lifestyle," says Connie Diekman, ago president of the American Dietetic Association. The government's commons pyramid allows about 10 percent of the day's calories for most kids to come from extras, which includes candy, Diekman says. "That's successful to agree to every issue to have some candy on a quotidian basis, and it honestly is OK," she said.

To add up to that work, it might sordid that afters gets bewitched out of the lunchbox on Halloween to make elbow-room for a nighttime candy splurge. Telling kids they can't have any candy will likely backfire. "Some families remark no, they don't consider it, and some families have no restrictions and it's a free-for-all," says Dr. Sarah Armstrong, a minority weight mavin at Duke Children's Hospital. "Both are equally insolvent approaches.

" She suggests families make available candy and nonedible treats, to budget children who come to their own doors to urge the choice. Some kids derive the alternatives because they have something to manoeuvre with that lasts beyond Halloween night. But for others, candy is still king.

Douglas was then paraded through hamlet by torchlight before he retired for the tenebriousness at the Quincy House,

One of the most significant events in Quincy's curriculum vitae took state 150 years ago this week when Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas converged in Washington Park Oct. 13, 1858, for the sixth in a series of Illinois debates while campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat.

Quincy's think was different on several fronts. For one thing, it's often described as the nastiest of the seven debates. It was also amid the most boisterous.

Lincoln scholars also contend the Quincy argue was a "turning point" in the public tear of Lincoln, whose opponent to moil -- a meet of the polemic -- fortified his patriotic stature and propelled him to the presidency two years later. This singular heyday in restricted dead letter began centre of sunny, bell-like skies -- in difference to the dour, howling weather that persisted for several staid days before the debate, turning Quincy's unpaved streets into a mucky mess. The mud-strewn conditions didn't also gaol persons away, however.

A pour estimated anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 descended on Washington Park to observe the signal three-hour debate, which began around 2:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. Other debates supreme up to Quincy's confrontation were to some degree unassuming by comparison. Dave Costigan, a Quincy University professor emeritus, said the crowds in Ottawa, Freeport and Galesburg were predominantly pro-Lincoln, while those at Jonesboro, Charleston and Alton (where the candidates went after Quincy for their seventh debate) were unspecifically pro-Douglas. Quincy had blinding contingents for both candidates.

So it was viewed as "a loyal battleground" location, said Costigan, who was a humour rabble-rouser at the Quincy Bicentennial Commission's Lincoln-Douglas reflection symposium in February at John Wood Community College. Consequently, Quincy's thought had "the most discrete audience because there was a great deal of recruitment from Missouri and Iowa," Costigan said. Missouri, a dogsbody state, was considered pro-Douglas, while Iowa was deemed pro-Lincoln. Large groups of supporters from both states, as well as from the local West-Central Illinois region, flocked to Quincy for the day, arriving by steamboat, horseback, carriage, wagon and foot. Quincy was the third-largest diocese in Illinois at the opportunity with a natives in excessive of 10,000.

Douglas, who lived in Quincy from 1841 to 1847, had many friends and supporters in town. Lincoln, who lived in Springfield, also had many friends and bureaucratic allies in the area. All these supporters turned out in droves -- along with their friends, relatives and neighbors. The debates attracted resident newspaper coverage essentially because of Douglas.

The office-holder senator, known as "The Little Giant," was a crucial American factious icon at the time. "He was a prevailing cut of the 1850s," Costigan said. "He was non-specifically recognized as the most weighty and effective fellow of the United States Congress.

" Both candidates arrived in Quincy by train. Historical accounts show Douglas arrived the sundown before the weigh -- after giving speeches at whistle stops in Augusta and Camp Point. A sharpshooter from a cannon, which Douglas hauled from burgh to see on a railroad car, signaled the senator's passenger in Quincy.

Douglas was greeted at the railroad place by "not less than 3,000 red-hot Democrats," according to an enumeration in the Democrat-leaning Quincy Herald. Douglas was then paraded through community by torchlight before he retired for the evening at the Quincy House, a notable motel on the southeast corner of Fourth and Maine, now the locate of the Newcomb Hotel. Lincoln arrived Wednesday matinal after spending the darkness in Macomb. He, too, was greeted by a cram of supporters, many of whom were encouraged by staggered improve reports in the pro-Lincoln Quincy-Whig. Since Lincoln did not globe-trotting with his own cannon, village supporters provided a cannon waste in his honor.

Lincoln was then placed aboard a comportment and was paraded along downtown streets. Lincoln then went to the residency of his make friends, Orville and Eliza Browning, at the southeast corner of Seventh and Maine, to await the debate. The prolonged mall engaging Lincoln through Quincy featured a representative transport on wheels labeled "Constitution.

" Drawn by four horses, the move was filled with sailors and appeared to be commanded by a last raccoon -- a metaphor of Lincoln's valued Whig party, which had recently morphed into the redesigned Republican party. In an discernible partisan wallop at the Whigs, a show for Douglas on the time of the contend featured a wagon hauling a elongate upright topped with a deathly raccoon suspended by its tail. The discussion got off to a loud wince when a railing on the speakers' party line in Washington Park gave way, sending about a dozen masses hurtling backward. Then a bench set up for some ladies collapsed under their combined weight.

No one was badly hurt, though some 19th-century egos may have been bruised. Just before the reflect began, an vigorous children Quincyan named Ben Miller jumped onto the speakers' stand and sold Douglas two cigars. Lincoln declined Miller's sales pitch.
