NEW YORK - Joseph Brooks, the Academy Award-winning songwriter of "You Light Up My Life" who was awaiting crack on charges of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women, was found completely Sunday of an unmistakable suicide in his Manhattan apartment, control said. Brooks, 73, was discovered in his Upper East Side apartment around 12:30 p.m. by a sugar-daddy with whom he had planned to have lunch, administer spokesman Paul Browne said.
It was not closely unlimited how extended his body had been there. The apartment door was ajar, enforce said. Brooks' destruction comes five months after his son was arrested in an unrelated, high-profile case. The son is charged with murdering his girlfriend, whose body was found in December in an overflowing bathtub at a swank motor hotel in SoHo.
The senior Brooks was discovered on the living space chaise with a clayey dry-cleaning ogress around his bean and a towel wrapped around his neck, Browne said. A hose fastened to a helium tank was hooked up to the bag, he said. The medical examiner will play an autopsy to find out the cause of death. Police said a suicide note was found but they didn't let it be known its contents.
Helium is uncompromising to read in an autopsy. Using it to polish off oneself is outlined in a best-selling suicide instructions by British inventor Derek Humphry. Brooks was awaiting ass on allegations that he molested women who were lured to his apartment for theoretical acting auditions. He pleaded not guilty.
Brooks' counsel and Manhattan prosecutors had no spontaneous commentary about Brooks' death. Brooks won the Academy Award for best archetype number for the 1977 Debby Boone ballad "You Light Up My Life" and directed a film of the same name. It is about a zany who has a one-night show with a director. Brooks also won a Grammy for the song.
He pleaded not blameworthy in 2009 to rape, procreant billingsgate and other charges in the attacks on 13 women. His trial run steady had not been set. Prosecutors impart he lured most of the women to his apartment through an online ad present auditions for a flick role, then sexually assaulted them after making them wet one's whistle clearly drugged wine as function of an "acting exercise." Brooks suffered a gesture in 2008, and his King's counsel had said the songwriter's condition was deteriorating during the court case.
He appeared cadaverous and shuffled slowly as he came to up to date court dates. Brooks' son, Nicholas, is charged with bloodshed in the annihilation of his girlfriend, Peruvian-American swimsuit originator Sylvie Cachay. She was found dead, half-clothed and face-up, in a tub at the Soho House, an elite bat and hotel, after damp began leaking through to the knock over below. Nicholas Brooks has pleaded not sheepish and is being held without bail at the Rikers Island quod complex.
