BURLINGTON The Burr and Burton Bulldog boys hockey pair made two promises to themselves after they mislaid to Mount St. Joseph in at winter's Division II asseverate championship game: to get back to Gutterson, reappear to the championship prepared and fulfil the job. The third-seeded Bulldogs made trustworthy on one likelihood and put themselves in point of view to fulfill the other on Monday by defeating the second-seeded Harwood Highlanders 4-1 in a Lake Division semifinal on the ice at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
"We made a potential to ourselves after losing a cartilaginous championship contest end year," Bulldog captain Trevor Pollock said. "We wanted to get back here and we wanted to get back and overcome the championship game." It's the third consecutive year that the Bulldogs have of a mind to of Harwood in the semifinal round.
The 19-2-2 Bulldogs are hoping for a rebroadcast of the 2007 mature when they defeated Harwood 3-2 in the semifinals and then went on to thrash North Country in the championship game. Ironically, North Country and Hartford were playing in the other semifinal game. For second-seeded, 20-2-1 Harwood, this was only the double diminution of the season. Harwood's only regular-season denial came to Burlington in an interdivisional also meet 20 games ago.
But the Highlanders came in a tittle under the weather, with several players, including their tonality player, Philip Kiendl, ill. The natural teach of Harwood became more patent as the field played out on the big ice sheet; absolutely the Highlanders didn't have the same intensity at the end that they did in the beginning. "No excuses," said Harwood mentor Dave Morse. "I though we played well in the prime years but they unquestionably took it to us and merit a lot of credit; they played a great game.
" From the off of the puck, it became outward that the Bulldogs master plan was to starch up the Highlanders in their own end and curb their shots on goal. This ploy came to the fore in the aid and third periods. The teams traded goals in the gold stretch with BBA getting on the game table opening on Ethan Edson's aim at 10:34 but Joe Ducharme knotted it up at 13:52. With the ground knotted 1-1 after one epoch with each group firing five shots on goal, the hard-working Bulldog defense employed a reinforced forechecking target and minimal Harwood's shots to 10 over the irrevocable two periods.
Although physically overmatched, the Bulldogs made up for the detriment with their abruptness and nonplus handling. "I tinge our defensemen did a exact job," Bulldog prompt Cory Herrington said. "We wanted to efficacious away that cross-ice overture and I kind-heartedness that we were flush in doing that.
" While the Bulldog defense was frustrating the Highlander offense, BBA's offense manufactured goals. Nearly five minutes into the newer period, wing Ben Brownlee serene the puck on indeterminate ice. He skated into the Harwood zone, dead beat the defense and took the puck down low, skating around the goal.
He popped out on the other minor where he let go a wrist snort from the face-off iota that subdue goalie Jeff Evans-Mongeon (13 saves). The aspiration dead the knot and lifted BBA into the tip for keeps at 4:27 of the second. The Bulldogs kept working hard, employing maddened forechecking and biding their time.
At 9:19 of the third period, the Bulldogs gained a two-goal govern when Alex Miskovsky crashed the end and converted a tolerably approval from Gustov Lindstrom from behind the net. Pollock set the scoring margin in motion. "I was stable pleased to observe that third goal," Herrington said. "It was big to get it at that time.
" BBA continued to handiwork to bridle the shots on their sophomore goalie Connor Stewart. And although he only faced 15 shots and turned back 14, he was deep when he had to be. With just over two minutes remaining, Stewart flashed the glove script and snared a go through the roof photo by Damien Gile, who was set up quite and was shooting for the more recent corner of the net. "He showed a lot of poise," Herrington said of Stewart. "He was fervent when he had to be.
" Harwood called set out with 1:27 unused to set up a play, flooding the province with an accessory attacker in state of the goalie. But Pollock intercepted the indecent proposal and sent Miskovsky away. The sophomore winger didn't miss, scoring an open-net objective to protect the big achieve first place for BBA at 14:11 of the third period.
