Her nomination for surgeon comprehensive requires Senate confirmation. Know.




WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's designee for surgeon hybrid has a stature as someone with the tender-hearted of effective personality that would choose her effective as the people's health advocate. Dr. Regina Benjamin is a pedigree doctor from a southern Alabama fishing community (Bayou La Batre). A decade ago, the New York Times described her as an "angel in a corpse-like coat," a motherland repair who made building calls along the poverty-stricken Gulf Coast and was paid only what her patients could scrounge.



Benjamin's nonprofit clinic was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, then rebuilt by volunteers only to fritter away down months later. On receiving a half-million "genius grant" from the MacArthur Foundation model fall, she spoke of accepting a $7 provision from a the missis wretched for the clinic to be rebuilt again. Benjamin said, "If she can hit upon $7, I can suppose out the rest.
